Best Greenhouse for Michigan

Michigan has two distinct growing challenges: the Upper Peninsula (Zone 3-4) faces Minnesota-level winters with over 200 inches of snow in some areas. The Lower Peninsula (Zone 5-6) battles lake-effect snow from Lakes Michigan, Huron, and Erie that can dump 3-4 feet in a single storm. Both demand a serious greenhouse. Here's what Michigan growers need.

The Lake-Effect Problem

Lake-effect snow is denser and heavier than typical snowfall. When Lake Superior, Michigan, or Erie dumps moisture-laden snow onto western and northern Michigan, it accumulates faster than most greenhouse frames are rated for. A frame rated for 55 PSF in Virginia may fail at 55 PSF in Michigan because lake-effect snow is significantly denser.

Our recommendation: go one PSF tier higher than you think you need if you're within 50 miles of a Great Lake.

Upper Peninsula Michigan

The Keweenaw Peninsula is the snowiest place in the eastern US. Copper Harbor averages 230+ inches annually. Zone 3-4. If you're growing in the UP, you need our highest-rated frame (98 PSF) and a heated greenhouse. The payoff: virtually unlimited season extension in a region where outdoor growing is barely 90 days.

Lower Peninsula: Grand Rapids, Traverse City, Detroit

Zone 5-6 with 60-120 inches of lake-effect snow depending on proximity to the lakes. Western Michigan (Grand Rapids, Muskegon, Traverse City) gets the worst of it — 75-98 PSF recommended. Eastern Michigan (Detroit, Flint, Lansing) is more manageable at 55-75 PSF.
